Jerry, a native of New Zealand, arrived on Phu Quoc Island on April 1st, 2007 (April Fools' Day—a detail Jerry delights in sharing). The island was very different then: no Google Maps, limited tourism, and an uncharted paradise waiting to be explored. Not long after settling in, Jerry noticed backpackers arriving with no clear idea of where to go or how to communicate. Spotting an opportunity, he put up a whiteboard outside his bungalow that read:

“Jerry Jungle Tours – See the island's secrets by motorbike.”

With only a phone number (email was out of the question back then), Jerry's humble venture began. Word spread, and soon, adventurous travelers were lining up to explore Phu Quoc's hidden gems.

Jerry’s big break came unexpectedly when a customer hired him for a two-day tour. At the end of the trip, the guest revealed that he was a travel writer for Lonely Planet and announced, “Jerry, you're going in the next edition.” Sure enough, Jerry Jungle Tours became the must-do experience for visitors to the island, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Beyond his thriving business, Jerry’s personal story is equally heartwarming. In his early days on Phu Quoc, Jerry spent six months alone, grappling with the end of a 25-year relationship. One day, while three Vietnamese women giggled on the beach in front of his bungalow, Jerry mustered the courage to strike up a conversation using sign language. What happened next could have been a scene from a romantic movie: one of the women took his hand as they walked, and from that day forward, she never let go.

Jerry and his wife built a beautiful life together. She brought joy back into his world, along with her 6-year-old son, who now affectionately calls Jerry “Papa.” Together, they’ve had two more children—a 16-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl—and their close-knit family is a testament to Jerry’s enduring spirit and love for the island.
